STD NOTES

More than 1 million sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are acquired every day worldwide. Word Health Organization. STD Fact Sheet

Individuals at higher risk for STI: Those with a new sexual partner, more than 2 sexual partners in the past year, sex workers and their clients, use of non-barrier contraception,  anonymous sexual partnering, previous STI, having sexual contact with person with a known STI, sexually active under 25 years of age, persons who inject drugs or other substance users, street involved/homeless, victims of sexual assault, men who have sex with men. Alberta Treatment Guidelines for Sexually Transmitted Infections 2018.

Complications of Sexually Transmitted infections in women:  Untreated infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, infertility, cervical cancer, fetal loss, infant health complications, with a fivefold increase in the risk of HIV acquisition and transmission. WHO. Report on global sexually transmitted infection surveillance. Geneva, Switzerland: World Health Organization 2013

Coming closer to a cure for human HIV infection

Scientists have successfully edited SIV -- a virus closely related to HIV, from the genomes of non-human primates.  The breakthrough brings researchers closer than ever to developing a cure for human HIV infection.

Syndromic management of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia lacks accuracy.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are two of the most common sexually transmitted infections. Management based on symptoms leads to undesired treatment outcomes.

Gay men have very distinct gut microbiomes.

Sexual behavior influences the individual’s gut microbiome and immune system, potentially elevating their risk of HIV infection.

Gene Therapy and Nano Science to Treat Chlamydia

The treatment targets Chlamydia infection by preventing the bacteria from entering cells in the genital tract.

HIV: Importance early test and treatment.

French study reaffirms CD4 cell count recovery with early initiation of HIV treatment

Men delay seeking medical attention following onset of urinary symptom.

Over a quarter of men aware of STI symptoms delay seeking health services.

Testing for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia in the rectum.

Neglecting to test the rectum for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia would miss up to 20% of infections. Pathogen could be in the rectal site only.

Gay men with hepatitis C are suffering stigma not seen since the HIV/AIDS crisis.

Hepatitis C has taken on the stigma and fear that HIV once carried. Infection disproportionately affects gay and bisexual men.

HPV Vaccination & Oropharyngeal cancer

The incidence of throat cancer is rising rapidly, especially in middle-aged men. More than 70% of new cases are HPV related. Vaccination reduces the risk of HPV infection.

Risk of STD with pubic hair grooming

One serious danger of grooming pubic hair is that an open wound might increase the risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease

Gonorrhea infection of the throat

Gonorrhea in the pharynx is easily missed and is more difficult to treat.

Herpes simplex type 1 infection: Mother-to-newborn Transmission

Pregnant women with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) antibodies against the virus, pass protection to their offspring.  By contrast, if HSV-1 infection is acquired during pregnancy, the risk of severe outcomes for the newborn is high.

Hepatitis B vaccine does not confer 100% protection against infection.

Hepatitis B vaccine is effective for the prevention of hepatitis B genotype-A and D. It may not be effective for the prevention genotype F.

HPV Vaccine may also prevent cancers affecting men

HPV vaccine that cuts the risk of cervical cancer in women, lower the chances of head and neck cancers in men.

Nearly half of adults are infected with the HPV

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) put them at risk for certain cancers. Vaccine should turn the tide against the virus.

Genital herpes in pregnancy and risk of autism risk in the baby

Children born to mothers who have active genital herpes during pregnancy may be at twice the risk of developing autism: Study

Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea appears to be developing resistance to the two antibiotics that constitute the dual regimen recommended by the CDC.

New vaccine trial against Herpes virus: Too early to celebrate.

The vaccine protects mice from HSV infection.

Gonorrhea Infection of Throat

Throat Gonorrhea resists antibiotic treatment

Chlamydia remains the most commonly reported STI

As chlamydia infection often shows no symptoms, the numbers underestimate the true picture.

False-negative type-specific antibody tests in patients with recurrent HSV-1 or HSV-2 PCR positive genital herpes.

Sexually transmitted viral infections affect sperm quality

Chronic viral infections can infect sperm and are considered a risk factor in male infertility

Human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 in Throat Cancer

Human papilloma virus (HPV) related oropharyngeal carcinoma is increasing in incidence.

Soaring Sexually Transmitted Infections in gay men

Continued rise in syphilis and gonorrhea is a special concern.
